Monarch Butterfly II
Beautiful Monarch Butterflies hold a special place in the hearts of the villages in Michoacán. Monarchs are Carriers of Souls and are believed to be the souls of our ancestors. Monarchs carry the soul of a relative or friend who, for one night, returns to the world of the living.
The “visit” is to celebrate Day of the Dead in the first days of November, which used to be the time of the great Western Monarch Migration. Monarchs would fly through Southern California, Baja, and Mexico in numbers that reached hundreds of thousands. Now, due to the changing climate, these populations are significantly diminishing. This migration no longer takes place as the Monarch Butterflies are unable to survive the rapidly increasing temperature changes.
